Beginner Level 1    N5

Being able to understand some basic Japanese.

Being able to speak and understand typical expressions and sentences written in hiragana, katakana, and basic kanji.


Basics Level2    N4

Being able to understand basic Japanese.

Being able to listen and comprehend conversations encountered in daily life and generally follow their contents, provided that they are spoken slowly.


Mid Level3    N3

Being able to understand Japanese used in everyday situations to a certain degree.

Being  able to listen and comprehend coherent conversations in everyday situations, spoken at a near-natural speed


Mid-high Level4    N2

Can use Japanese to discuss things

Being able to comprehend orally presented materials such as coherent conversations and news reports, spoken at nearly natural speed in everyday situations as well as in a variety of settings


High Level5    N1 Close to the native speaker and can understand Japanese used in a variety of circumstances.
